It takes several years before the trunk size and bark shedding starts to lend a variety of colors. Not a good candidate for growing in a pot. To answer Scott in Omaha, They have a very long tap root and even at a young age it shoots thru the bottom of the pot. The bees and butterfly's come for miles and flood my back yard when it is in bloom. Here in the Tampa Bay area, bloom time is early spring and the tree is covered with clusters of little white blooms.
